These amphitheatres, the largest of which is about 36m deep and 220 m long, were probably used before the Inca Empire’s heyday and served as agricultural laboratories to determine the optimal conditions for crop growth. It was probably a sanctuary. Machu Picchu was home to priests, high officials, servants, craftsmen, and especially acllas, virgins dedicated to the service of the «Sun God». The city discovered by the American archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911 remained inaccessible until an archaeological mission discovered in 1940 the «Path of the Inca» which, through the «Sacred Valley of the Incas» leads to the citadel. The fate of the inhabitants of this city remains unknown. Both during the Conquest and during the colonial era, the Spanish never discovered the site of Machu Picchu, because it was invisible from the bottom of the valley. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the disappearance of its occupants: epidemic, ostracism (and thus oblivion) during the cruel civil war that tore the empire before its fall.
